Heads voice views on extension

Research into the attitudes of schools towards the Government's extended schools initiative has found that a significant number of headteachers are committed to the concept, but many have key areas of concern. The survey, carried out by 4Children and supported by the DfES, is the first to gauge current support for the extended schools programme among schools.

It found that 63 per cent of headteachers would like their school to become an extended school and 43 per cent of the primary schools questioned were very or extremely likely to start developing childcare in school within the next two years.

However, schools said they needed help to achieve this and seven out of ten headteachers said they would look to their local authority for a support service to help them, especially with setting up childcare.
