Health promotion given new thrust

Schools are being given Government guidance for promoting a fit and healthy lifestyle for children. The Healthy Living Blueprint brings together a range of resources and ideas to assist schools in providing an all-round approach to well-being. The Government says it is about to invest 1m in improving school meals, with money earmarked to revise nutritional standards and provide support for sourcing healthy meals.

Physical education is also identified as a key plank of the campaign, with sustained investment in specialist staff and expanded sports activities.

More than 1bn has been spent on PEand school sport since 1997.

The Blueprint has a specific focus for early years, outlining practical exercises for increasing children's interest in and understanding of food.

It emphasises that healthy eating is a high priority for those settings which provide care for the entire working day. In 2005 day nurseries will be invited to join the Healthy Start Scheme and by the end of the year will be entitled to claim reimbursement for providing fruit and milk.
