Helping children of drinkers

By Lord Victor Adebowale, chief executive of Turning Point Turning Point's recent campaign 'Bottling It Up' highlights the problems faced by one in 11 children (1.3 million) in the UK living with parents who misuse alcohol. Alcohol misuse is not just a question of the amount or type of alcohol a person drinks - it is about the effect that the drinking has on the individual and their children and family. Although the problem is widespread, we have found that there is a lack of awareness of the issue, and that there are simply not enough services to support these families.

We know that parents who misuse alcohol are not all bad parents, but it can have far-reaching consequences. Parents may struggle to care for their children, find it difficult to show affection or be inconsistent. Children can have health and social problems or behavioural problems later in life.
