My Grandmother's Clock
written by Geraldine McCaughrean and illustrated by Stephen Lambert (Collins, 9.99)
This is a sunny, relaxed book set by the seaside. A young girl is staying with her grandparents. Their home and the surrounding countryside are conjured up by the author's poetic words and the illustrator's rich vision, which are marvellously paired.
The clock in the book's title doesn't work any more. But grandma tells her granddaughter that there are lots of other ways to tell the time. She measures time against concrete events - the best way for children to understand. So, 'An hour is the time it takes for the bath water to go cold... or for your grandfather to read the newspaper...' Morning is measured by the call of the birds, and evening by the winking of the harbour lights sending messages to the ships out at sea.
