In brief...

Scotland's first-ever School Awards have been launched by the Scottish Executive. The awards celebrate academic excellence in nursery, primary, secondary and special schools. First minister Jack McConnell said, 'When I became Education Minister and visited classrooms across the country, it became clear there was a tremendous amount of hard work delivering success in schools by teachers, pupils, parents and the whole education service. These awards will recognise and reward that.' Categories for the ten winners include 'Achieving Excellence' for schools with strong links with parents, and 'Education Supporter' for non-teaching staff who make an outstanding contribution to school life. Information packs and entry forms will be sent to all schools and nurseries. For more forms or details call the helpline on 08000 27 28 24. The closing date is Friday 25 January.
