In brief...Home Zones scheme

Local authorities have been invited to bid for a share of 30m to improve the quality of life in residential streets. The money has been made available under the Home Zones scheme, which aims to make streets safer and more pleasant for children and adults through such initiatives as play areas, seating, landscaping and traffic calming. There are currently nine pilot projects in England and Wales, including the village of Magor in Monmouthshire, where the plan includes road humps, a one-way system, trees and games for children.
