In brief...Nearly half of all householders

Nearly half of all householders in England say they want to see improved opportunities and facilities for children and young people in their local areas, according to preliminary results of the 2000-2001 survey of English housing carried out for the Department for Transport, Local Government and Regions. Asked what improvements they wanted to see, 45 per cent of respondents said facilities for children and young people and 38 per cent mentioned local amenities, parks and leisure facilities. The survey also found that 70 per cent (14.4m) of households in England owned their own home, 20 per cent (4.2m) rented from the local authority and 10 per cent (2m) rented privately. Just under a quarter (22 per cent) of households contain a couple with dependent children and 7 per cent a lone parent with dependent children.
