In brief...Parents of disabled

Parents of disabled children under the age of 18 will have greater flexibility in striking a balance between work and care, after an increase in the length of parental leave they can take. Announcing last week that leave entitlement for those with disabled children would increase from 13 to 18 weeks in total until their child's 18th birthday, trade and industry secretary Stephen Byers said it would 'make a real difference to thousands of families with children suffering from a disability who need more time to deal with the considerable pressures they face'. Philippa Russell, director of the Council for Disabled Children, welcomed the extension of parental leave and added, 'It will help equalise opportunities for those parents who have additional caring responsibilities.'
