People in Britain walk an average 186 miles per year, says the National Travel Survey for 1998-2000. It found that the number of primary-aged children walking to school has fallen four percentage points from 62 per cent to 56 per cent since 1989-91, while the number of children driven to school has risen nine points from 27 to 36 per cent.
