In brief...The Department for Education and Skills reorganised

The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) has been reorganised with the aim of bringing the childcare and early years divisions together and providing better services to Early Years Development and Childcare Partnerships and families. The new Early Years and Childcare Unit was created following an internal review which focused on the need to work effectively both internally and with outside organisations and to maintain coherence with policy on Sure Start, education, welfare-to-work and employment. The new integrated structure was recommended by the review's steering group. A DfES spokeswoman confirmed that responsibility for childcare and early years remained with minister Baroness Ashton but said the DfES worked closely with the Department for Work and Pensions and Patricia Hollis on childcare issues.
