In brief...The Scottish Social Services

The Scottish Social Services Council, which will ultimately be responsible for registering all childcarers and defining their professional code of conduct, was formally established at the beginning of this month. The council will also register carers working with the elderly and in children's homes, and will set standards for their training. Education minister Jack McConnell said, 'We will see a new professionalism among the workforce, bringing with it increased levels of confidence and competence. The emphasis on education and training, which I very much support, will mean a more able workforce equipped to deliver higher quality services. Ultimately this means greater public protection, which I am sure will be widely welcomed.'
