Paediatric first aid training is one of those core skills that all early years practitioners need to acquire, but hope they never have to use in an emergency.

The National Day Care Standards state there has to be at least one member of staff with a valid first aid training certificate on the premises or on outings at any one time.

However, Dawn Markham, quality childcare manager with the National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA), speaks for many practitioners when she says the legislation is not strict enough. She says, 'In practice, you maybe need only two or three people qualified in paediatric first aid to have cover of one person all the time. In a staff team of, say, 20 to 25 people, I don't think that is enough.
