Inclusion: Practitioners offered 2m training

A 2m project will develop training for early years settings and schools to support children with speech, language and communication difficulties.

The DCSF funding for 2007- 08 is part of the new Inclusion DevelopmentProgramme to tackle improving the skills of those working with childrenwith special educational needs.

The communication charity I CAN and Dyslexia Action will developtraining materials for the programme as part of the Government'sstrategy for children with SEN and disabilities.

Over the next four years, training on autism, behavioural problems andlearning difficulties will also be developed.

A survey by the Communication Trust this year found that only 35 percent of teachers and teaching assistants felt confident that they couldmanage children's communication needs. I CAN says that in some parts ofthe country up to half of children start school without the skills theyneed to learn.
