Inclusion through the Expressive Arts

Children with special needs have been developing their creative talents through a Stirling-based project involving mask-making, puppetry, music and artwork. Inclusion through the Expressive Arts, funded by Stirling Council, is one of a number of projects listed in a Scottish Executive report, A Summary of Key Outcomes from the Special Educational Needs Innovations Grants Programme (1999 - 2002), available on the website www.scotland.gov.uk. The report says, 'The project increased understanding of the diversity of learning styles as well as awareness that many children have hidden aptitudes which can often surface through creative activities.' Other schemes include a special needs toy library for use in playgroups, nurseries and homes in Shetland, and a project encouraging staff at different pre-school settings to share good practice in communication and language development.
