Infant humor: the theory of the absurd and the empowerment theory

Infant humor: the theory of the absurd and the empowerment theory How six infants (age 15-22 months) in a group childcare setting produced and appreciated humour, with smiles and laughter. Findings suggest two theories best describe young children's humorous behaviour. The Theory of the Absurd includes events that are out of the ordinary, challenge children's existing schemata and views of the world, and are emphasised by children's incongruous actions or use of materials. Empowerment Theory describes young children's ability to challenge the expectations of their caregivers and use humour to empower themselves.
