Infant school wins award for European study

* A Sunderland infant school specialising in giving its children a head start in European culture and languages has received a National Languages for Exports award. The awards, by Trade Partners UK, aim to improve international language capabilities through education, services and company innovation. Barnes Infant School in Sunderland won the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance Award for Schools and Colleges for its innovative curriculum for children aged three to seven.

Classes at the school study customs, currency, languages and music within European culture. Children are also taken for a visit to the European Parliament.

Headteacher Sylvia Elmes, who initiated the school's project ten years ago, said, 'I am very proud that our hard work has been recognised, especially as we are in the north-east of England and the acknowledgement is national.'
