When Sorrel Ayres, a mother of three, started thinking about moving into early years management, she faced the daunting prospect of trying to juggle an NVQ course with her family and work commitments. 'I had enrolled on an NVQ at the local college and then the APEL award came up. It has been brilliant,' she says. The Level 3 Certificate in Work with Children: Accreditation of Prior Experience and Learning (APEL) Award, which was launched a year ago, was developed specifically for people like Ms Ayres: experienced, competent practitioners working at level 3 but who do not have a level 3 qualification.
