'Kidult' key to bedtime story increase

* Books that appeal to both children and adults, such as the Harry Potter series and The Lord of the Rings, have helped to more than double the number of parents reading to their children, a survey has found. The survey, by energy company Powergen, found 90 per cent of parents in the UK now read their children bedtime stories. Half of parents had read a so-called 'kidult' book in the past year; 94 per cent of mothers read to their children and 86 per cent of fathers.

The survey also found that people in Scotland were more likely to read to their children than other regions - 92 per cent said they read with their children on a regular basis.

Psychologist and author Dr Aric Sigman said, 'Books such as The Lord of the Rings can be interpreted on more than one level, making them interesting and stimulating for all ages. Parents and children are now actively choosing to read the same books.'
