It would be impossible for any practitioner to speak all the languages in many settings - for example, there are some 70 languages spoken by children, parents and staff at one east London primary school. However, there are various strategies that can help all practitioners feel confident that they are supporting the bilingual and multilingual children that they work with, and ensure that all young children are introduced to the rich linguistic diversity of today's Britain. * Conduct a language survey of children, parents, carers and staff. (You may be surprised at the range of languages that are known). Find out which languages children speak with their parents, siblings and other family members and the languages read and written at home.
