Learning Country goes into action for second stage

A strategic plan for education from now until 2010 unveiled by the Welsh Assembly aims to support children and their families from the earliest years. 'The Learning Country: Vision into Action' represents the second stage in 'The Learning Country' programme that began in 2001. Key proposals include taking forward the Assembly's Flying Start and the Foundation Phase initiatives.

Minister for education and lifelong learning Jane Davidson (pictured) launched the plan at New Tredegar Integrated Children's Centre in south Wales.

Ms Davidson envisioned the opportunities that a child born today, named Megan, might have. 'If Megan is part of the new Flying Start programme for babies to three-year-olds, she and her parents will have dedicated health, education and childcare support to prepare her for the new Foundation Phase to be introduced across Wales for three- to seven- year-olds in 2008, with its emphasis on active learning.'
