Life-long friends Rona Broderick, writing here, and Nicola Belgrave turned an East End London pub into the nursery they had dreamt of since they were 18 Nicola and I have known each other since we were four years old. I work as a registered childminder and Nicola is a deputy manager at a nursery. When I left school I studied business and Nicola pursued childcare, but at 18 we had a brainwave - we would combine our career paths and start a nursery.

We planned, saved, attended seminars and acquired as much knowledge as we could. I took a course in childcare, while Nicola gained much-needed experience.

Six years later, we felt ready to take the plunge. We spent some time searching for a suitable property and came across an unoccupied pub for lease in our local vicinity of Forest Gate in London. We researched the area to see if there was a demand for nursery provision, visited the property, fell in love with it immediately and decided to go ahead and purchase it.
