Early years practitioners can help the parents of autistic children find some of the support that they so desperately need, writes Kerry Evans, mother of two autistic sons

Imagine being a parent who has to plan every second of an appointment to see your GP, or the daily trip to the newsagent. It may be too crowded or noisy, or the lights might be too bright. Envisage waiting 30 minutes for a meal in a restaurant and then having to leave as it is served because your child has taken offence to the fixtures, or is too hungry to behave in a rational fashion. Add to this the need to fight for basic rights like education, medical treatment, disability benefits and respite care, and you get the barest inkling of what it's like to live with a child who is autistic.
