Local strategies aim to tackle obesity

Guidance for tackling childhood obesity has been produced for local authorities and Primary Care Trusts by the Department of Health.

The 'Healthy Weight, Healthy Lives' toolkit concentrates on localstrategies for preventing obesity and ways to promote a healthy weight.It follows on from the launch of a cross-Government strategy to fightchildhood obesity earlier this year (News, 31 January).

The kit suggests ways for childcare providers and local healthprofessionals to tackle bad diet and increase physical activity bychildren. It stresses that children should be encouraged to take part inactive play as part of their daily routines.

It advises that educational sessions be held at children's centres toteach families how to make healthy food choices and keep young childrenactive.

Chief executive of the National Heart Forum, Paul Lincoln, said, 'Thenew toolkit will help to focus minds in Primary Care Trusts and localauthorities on effectively preventing and tackling obesities.'
