The world is full of wonderful sights great and small, if you show children where to look. Jean Evans suggests simple activities to stimulate exploration through vision Look around you

Look around you

Encourage children to look more closely at the details of objects by introducing new and exciting experiences.

* Look for patterns as you lie on your backs and observe the blue sky through the branches of a tree, or examine the criss-cross patterns of veins on the back of a leaf. Discover man-made patterns in the colourful panes of a stained glass window or the arrangement of bricks on a wall.

* Observe colours in a rainbow, a tub of shiny beads or a brightly patterned fabric.

* Experiment with colour mixing at the paint table and discuss the new shades that the children have created.
