Lottery to invest 165m in early years projects

Up to 10,000 babies and children under three will be offered support through a range of early intervention projects funded by 165m in lottery funding.

'A Better Start', funded by the Big Lottery Fund (BIG), aims to support babies’ and toddlers’ physical, emotional and psychological development.

Local authorities and voluntary and community organisations are being invited to put forward expressions of interest to be considered for development grant funding.

In January, around 30 to 50 areas will be chosen for the longlist, which will then be whittled down to ten to 15 areas. The successful projects will each be awarded up to £400,000 to develop their schemes.

In 2014, final grants worth from £30 to £50m over the next ten years will be awarded to voluntary and community-led projects in three to five areas, who will develop their programmes and gather evidence to show the benefit of early years support for children, society and the economy.
