Lowest-ranked council scores outstanding all round

Stoke-on-Trent is the first local authority in the country to achieve an outstanding Ofsted rating at all of its maintained nursery schools.

All seven of Stoke-on-Trent's council-run nursery schools have been have been inspected over the past 12 months.

The results come after the authority's children's services department was ranked bottom of all local authorities in the Annual Performance Assessment last year (News, 1 February 2007).

This prompted the council to bring in a private company, Serco Education and Children's Services, to take over the running of the department.

Kingsland Nursery School in Bucknall has just received its outstanding grade after being assessed at the end of May.

Inspectors praised the school's excellent leadership, the staff's 'superb understanding' of how children learn and achieve, their 'sensitive, loving support' and their 'exceptionally high professionalism'. The report said, 'Outstanding relationships among staff and children and a highly creative curriciulm underpin the nursery's success. As a result, children's behaviour and attitudes are exemplary and contribute much to their outstanding achievement.'
