At a major conference in London last week called 'The future is now: creating excellent nurseries indoors and out', Baroness Ashton outlined the role schools will play in delivering the Government's Neighbourhood Nurseries Initiative.
She described the scheme as 'a key strand of our desire as a Government to combat poverty', and said it offered 'an unrivalled opportunity to be imaginative and creative'.
Baroness Ashton said she wanted all MPs 'to think it's the best thing in their constituency'. Neighbourhood Nurseries were part of an integrated approach to early education, childcare and family support to keep vulnerable children from missing out on services, she said. This integrated structure must be embedded, 'never to be ripped up', and it was essential to make the most of the infrastructure already in place to ensure sustainability.
