Management route

Following the feature 'Up to the job' (28 March), about further management training available, I would like to add that another route is possible through the Certificate in Management and then the Diploma in Management. They are generic qualifications but well suited to any management posts in the childcare or early years sectors. I am a qualified childcare officer and completed my Certificate in Management five years ago. I started my Diploma in Management/ NVQ 5 last September and hopefully will complete it in June this year. I have found that, having worked as a registration and inspection officer, an operations manager and more recently development co-ordinator, these qualifications have given me a very useful and broad knowledge.

With the Institute of Management having recently been awarded the status of Chartered Institute, it will soon be possible to have the title of 'chartered manager', which should be a bit of a novelty in the childcare sector but which, at the same time, should help to raise the status of the profession. Progression is also possible towards the MBA, which could start some interesting developments in the childcare sector.
