A week of farewell parties is planned for the manager of one of Westminster Children's Society's community childcare centres and lead SENCO for all the voluntary organisation's nurseries, who is retiring after 31 years of service. Ms Wale said, 'The children think I am leaving to go to infant school, like the other children do when they leave nursery.

'But I'm going to take some time off, and enjoy not having to get up at 5.30am to commute in to London from Kent. I'm going to recharge my batteries and relax over the summer, and then decide whether to do voluntary or consultancy work.'

She added, 'To work for a nursery in the West End of London has been unique. There are a lot of families and a real community in the area.'
