Working with felt under the guidance of a local artist led to surprising results for children, their families and the staff team at one setting. Nathan Archer explains

'It feels like clouds' said four-year-old Leon, describing the texture of felt during a three-month art project that the Children's House nursery and Montessori school undertook last year.

Wendy Chan, a local artist who specialises in felt-making and screen printing, inspired the children throughout the nursery, school and out-of-school club. Staff and parents were also strongly involved in the Fabric of Life project, funded by the Arts Council England.

Staff had identified creative development as an area of learning that needed attention. The project gave them the opportunity to learn new skills alongside the children. The materials were safe and easy to use and were ideal for producing individual and large-scale group works.
