Maypole dancing at Dornie Hall near the Eilean Donan Castle

(Photograph) - Maypole dancing at Dornie Hall near the Eilean Donan Castle in the Highlands was just one of the events celebrating Scotland's first Bookstart Day last week. Children visited castles and donned castle-themed costumes to listen to stories and songs about princes and princesses. A 750,000 grant from the Scottish Executive has been allocated to support the Bookstart project over the next three years, including a free bag of books given by health visitors to every baby in Scotland at their seven- to nine-month check-up. For more information visit www.bookstart.co.uk or call Caroline McLeod, the national co-ordinator for Bookstart in Scotland, on 0131 556 7990. Photograph by Photo Peter Jolly/Northpix
