Media spotlight on home reading

Cathy Jamieson, minister for education and young people, launched a radio and press campaign to encourage parents to read to their children last week at Arthurlie nursery school in Barrhead. Ms Jamieson said, 'Introducing your child to books at an early age is one of the best gifts any parent can give. The reading children do out of school is invaluable in helping them develop good literacy skills for later life.'

The radio and press campaign is the latest development in the three-year Scottish Executive Home Reading Initiative, launched last August with the publication of a leaflet for parents on the benefits and techniques of reading to children from birth to eight. The initiative aims to encourage parents and carers to take a more active role in their child's education by reading to them at home.
