Scotland on Sunday warned that children were in for a 'leaner Christmas' with cash-strapped parents. The average child will receive gifts totalling Pounds 220 this year, compared to 309 in 2004.

The Daily Mail revealed that one in three children do not know chips are made from potatoes. Many of the eight-to 14-year-olds surveyed said they were made from oil, eggs, flour or apples.

The Scottish edition of The Sunday Times said nursery staff were 'consulting' babies because Scottish Executive guidelines had warned they could 'fall foul' of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
