Members of Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS) vote to ballot for industrial action if class sizes not reduced

Members of Scotland's largest teaching union, the Educational Institute of Scotland (EIS), have voted to ballot for industrial action if the Scottish Executive does not agree to reduce class sizes further. The motion was passed last week at the union's annual general meeting in Dundee and included an amendment setting a deadline of December. An EIS spokesman said, 'The feeling among members is that although the Executive has made a commitment, we don't think it goes far enough.' He said the union's 'ultimate aim' was to see class sizes reduced to 20 from Primary 1 in all subjects and that if the EIS was not satisfied that the Executive was moving towards this, it would ballot for strike action. The Executive has promised to reduce class sizes to 25 in Primary 1 and 20 in maths and English in secondary school by 2007. It also aims to recruit 53,000 teachers by 2007 to target these and other areas.
