Minders' support

Your correspondent Hazel Robinson (23 August) is right to say that childminders need to make a decent living from what is a hard and responsible job. One of the key points in the National Childminding Association's manifesto at the general election was that 'affordable' childcare should not be subsidised by childminders' low pay. That's why we continue to campaign for more help with costs to be given to parents.

Childminders need help with their costs too. As a result of our campaigning the Government introduced start-up grants earlier this year. I'm sorry Hazel was not told about them at her pre-registration meeting.

She also seems to have been given the impression that there is a recommended rate for childminders' fees. There isn't. Childminders are self-employed and the fees they charge are a matter for negotiation with parents. But it is interesting to note that in setting its rates for Working Families Tax Credit, the Government has assumed a much higher hourly fee than most childminders are currently charging.
