Ministerial responsibilities

Ministerial responsibilities for Catherine Ashton, the early years and school standards minister for England, have been outlined by the Department for Education and Skills. She is responsible for the early years, early years education, childcare, daycare services, Sure Start, literacy and numeracy strategies in primary schools, the science year, pupils with individual needs, special educational needs, ethnic minority achievement, school inclusion, equality issues in education, schools capital and PPP/PFI, school transport, curriculum and testing, the national curriculum, assessment and testing from age five to 14, performance tables, education business links and Schools Plus, ICT in schools, the National Grid for Learning, computers for teachers, school organisation and local education authorities, primary school organisation and admissions case work, green issues, rural schools, playing fields, primary admissions and reorganisation, class sizes and school governance. David Miliband, the recently-appointed school standards minister, has overall responsibility for raising school standards, as well as Ofsted, Education Action Zones, remodelling the school workforce, support staff in schools, and the overview of five-to-16 admissions and school organisation policy.
