Ministers get to grips with child poverty

Ministers set out priorities with key London agencies at the first meeting of the London Child Poverty Ministerial Working Group last week.

Children's minister Beverley Hughes and Work and Pensions ministerStephen Timms met with the group, which was formed last month to try toincrease employment for parents in the capital (News, 10 April). It ismade up of MPs, local authorities, the Mayor's office, employers andexperts from the voluntary sector.

Members include chief executive of the Child Poverty Action Group, KateGreen, and chief executive of the Peabody Trust, Stephen Howlett.

The working group intends to finish this autumn and publish a reportsetting out the next steps for tackling child poverty.

The child poverty rate in inner London remains at 35 per cent, above thenational average of 22 per cent. Evidence shows that this is largely dueto lower rates of employment for parents in the capital.
