Staff pay rises and nursery fees are rocketing, with some owners losing the battle to balance the two, according to a survey carried out for Nursery Business.

A third (36 per cent) of staff salaries rose by 4 to 6 per cent while only a quarter of fees (24 per cent) increased by the same amount. A further third of staff (31 per cent) enjoyed pay rises of 6 to over 10 per cent, forcing a similar number (37 per cent) of providers to hike up fees by the same amount.

The increases put one third (34 per cent) of fees in the 111-130 a week bracket, while a fifth (20 per cent) were 151 or more.
