More cash from the new opportunities fund

Stephanie Campbell, co-ordinator of the Oakleaf Rural Community Network in County Derry in Northern Ireland, was one of the speakers at a reception held in London recently to celebrate the work of the New Opportunities Fund in financing out-of-school clubs. The number of clubs has doubled to 7,000 since 1999 - and half have received support from the Fund. A total of 171 million has been awarded so far, creating 370,000 places. Next year, these figures will reach 320 million and 432,500 places.

Stephanie co-ordinates and manages 14 out-of school clubs that are particularly valued in a rural area where many children are isolated.

'Every time we consulted our member organisations about what communities really needed, the demand for quality childcare came near the top of the list,' she said. 'Parents need to be able to find childcare close to where they live or work, and in a county that is 95 per cent rural, this has always been an issue. The clubs we have been able to set up are helping to meet that need.'

The NOF Out-of-School Hours Childcare Programme was due to close in March, but an extra 28.97 million for 50,000 new after-school places was announced last month. There will be two new rounds for applications, with the closing dates of 15 April and 15 June. Applicants to the Fund have a high success rate -more than 91 per cent of past applicants have received grants - so if you want to expand, go for it!

Grants are normally for one year, but clubs in disadvantaged areas can apply for a three-year grant. Other additional funding is also available.
