More help sought for grandparents

An 'army' of grandparents juggle essential childcare responsibilities with jobs or caring for other adults, according to a new report out this week, which also highlights the anxiety and financial difficulties many of them face. The report Grandparents talking, by the charity Grandparents Plus, a centre for information and training, calls for greater Government recognition and debate about the vital caring role that many grandparents provide.

The value of childcare provided by grandparents in the UK, looking after children under 12, is valued at more than 1 billion a year. There are 13 million grandparents in the UK and nearly five million of them spend the equivalent of three days a week looking after their grandchildren.

The charity is calling on the Government to consult grandparents to find out what needs to be done to support them.
