More male childcarers on the horizon

I was pleased to read the two news stories, one 'Challenge gender roles in the nursery' and the other about Danny Foster of Hear'Say giving his backing to a recruitment campaign for more male childcarers in Surrey (both 22 November). It is apparent to me as a placement officer for Reading College, with Diploma in Childcare and Education (DCE) and Certificate in Childcare and Education (CCE) students, that male students who might consider a career in childcare are reluctant to embark on it, as the image of the profession is still dominated by women. But the profession is changing.

I am happy to say that at present our college has enrolled two male students this year for the DCE course, with another male student embarking on NVQ. The students are having a fantastic time in their placements and the children simply adore them. I would like to thank the placements for their support.
