'I am confident that its extension will provide essential support for the implementation of the Scottish Executive's Childcare Strategy in rural areas, highlighting the particular difficulties faced by children and families in rural communities, and assisting developments in policies and services aimed at addressing these.'

Work so far includes providing information to childcare partnerships to help them develop rural services, producing a good practice guide on delivering childcare training in rural areas, and encouraging rural employers toward family-friendly working practices.
