Travel subsidy for rural care

The Scottish Executive has awarded funding of nearly 20,000 to the Association of Shetland Pre-School Play to subsidise the cost of children's travel to pre-schools and after-school clubs. The Pounds 18,546 grant, announced last week, was awarded under the Executive's Rural Community Transport Initiative (RCTI), which helps voluntary organisations to provide transport in rural areas where public transport is limited.

The funding will be used to provide local operators, mainly minibuses, for children to attend voluntary sector pre-school and after-school care.

Volunteer escorts will accompany the children. The award has been made to the Association of Shetland Pre-School Play, but will also benefit members of the Shetland Out-of-School Care Association.

The award renews a similar grant under the RCTI made three years ago, which has benefited eight groups based across Shetland. Sandra Gray, chair of the Shetland Childcare Partnership, commented, 'This has helped the groups'
