Move on up

Although she had originally trained as a speech and language therapist, Isobel Pine felt she needed a more appropriate qualification when she moved to the position of nursery assistant at the Hawthorn School in Bletchingley, Surrey. 'I found out about the APEL award through Nursery World,' she says. 'The reason it really appealed to me was that I could do all the work online and it didn't take long to complete. I started it at the end of January this year and finished it at the end of March.'

Ms Pine says that her mentor was nothing short of 'brilliant' and she found the course as a whole very straightforward. 'I've worked with children all my life so it was really a case of getting down on paper everything I already knew,' she says. 'There were 10 sections which could be completed in any way - either as bullet points or headed paragraphs, for example - and there was plenty of guidance for the reflective studies, which drew on my past experience. As the qualification does not call for observation by an assessor, two professional testimonies were required from people who could vouch for my work.'
