'After doing A Levels in English Language, English Literature and Psychology I decided I wanted to do a degree with a practical element to it and I had always had an interest in working with children since taking childcare at GCSE. The BA in Early Childhood Studies seemed to fit the bill,' says Helen Hearn. 'There are three areas of optional modules - education, social policy and law - and I chose the education modules. These range from working with children with special needs to managing early years settings. I mainly picked modules that focused on English, such as stories and story telling and literacy in early years, as this is the area I am specifically interested in.

'Assessment is 50 per cent examination and 50 per cent assignment and there is a mixture of lectures and seminars. With only six hours of teaching a week, there is plenty of opportunity to do independent study and work experience.
