Develop awareness of addresses and telephone numbers

Adult-led

Practise ordering numbers with a telephone numbers game.

Planned learning intention

To recognise numerals 1 to 9

Resources

Number tiles, cards with invented telephone numbers printed on them.

Adult:child ratio 1:4

Step by step

* Let the children take turns to choose a printed telephone number and to recreate it with the number tiles.

* Invite another child to check that the number created with the tiles matches the printed number.

* This child can then rearrange the tiles from one to nine as quickly as possible, ready for another child to choose and recreate another number.

* Ensure that each child has a turn at checking and ordering the numbers.

Stepping stones

* A child with little experience may choose to observe others rather than engaging in the activity. They will probably enjoy manipulating the equipment. They may refer to numbers randomly or by rote. They will need help to order numbers.

* A child with some experience will probably match numbers confidently, but may need support to put them in order.

* A child with more experience will probably match and order the numbers confidently. They will be able to tutor others and provide support to less experienced children. They will be able to extend the activity by recording.

Extension ideas

* The children themselves can write the telephone numbers for the start of the game. Tell them how many digits to include in each telephone number.

* Tap the telephone numbers into a calculator to enhance number recognition and develop fine motor skills.
