Nanny register is put off by minister

Angry nannies were told last weekend that the Government is 'nowhere near' thinking about a national register of nannies.

Sure Start minister Catherine Ashton told the Professional Nanny conference in London that the Government had given the issue of nanny registration 'a great deal of thought' but that it still stood by the recommendation of the Better Regulation Task Force, which said nanny registration was 'unjustified'.

In its review of Early Education and Childcare, the Taskforce said nannies should not be registered because the 'licensing of nannies or agencies would fail our tests of good regulation'. Baroness Ashton said she agreed with this and that while she recognised 'what an incredibly valuable role (nannies) play in supporting children and families', the 'job of government was to encourage parents to use approved carers'.
