New child poverty moves demanded

Britain needs 'a cohesive strategy' to reach the UK's poorest and most vulnerable children, the charity Barnardo's said last week. At the start of its four-week 'Silver Spoons' advertisement campaign, Barnardo's said it was aiming 'to highlight the fact that despite having the fourth-largest economy in the world, the UK has one of the highest levels of child poverty of all industrialised countries'. One in three children in the UK lives in poverty, it said.

A report, Poverty Wrecks Futures, which the charity published to support the campaign, called for the Government to take children out of poverty by establishing a minimum income for all people bringing up children, and to ensure its policies reached the children who are the most vulnerable and poorest, such as the disabled. It also called for the Social Fund to be reformed so that grants and loans were more readily available to poor families, and to follow the lead of most other European countries by imposing a statutory limit on interest rates to protect the poorest families from being exploited by credit companies and loan sharks.
