New children's centres are ready to go

Children's centres in Hampshire are being built in a day and completed in weeks using the latest high-speed building methods.

Brazier Construction, part of the Kier Group, is building 16 children'scentres in an 8m project with Hampshire County Council. The firstis due to open at Pennington Primary School in Lymington this month.

Fifteen of the centres will be on school sites.

The factory-made, steel-framed units are faster to install than usingtraditional building methods, and the construction sites are thought tobe safer because the 16m x 4m units can be delivered complete to thelocation, with plumbing and electricity ready to be linked up to make asingle-storey structure.

Shane Mason, director responsible for Brazier Construction, said, 'Weput in the foundations and the drainage. The modular units are thenlifted in by crane and bolted together in a day.'

Each centre takes around ten to 12 weeks to complete.

The safety manager for Kier Southern has been giving safetypresentations to children at each school installing the units, and thereis a competition with prizes in different age categories for the bestposter to get across the message about how to stay safe on a buildingsite.

Mr Mason said, 'It's important to educate children that the site is nota playground.'

He added, 'Children are killed or injured each year by trespassing on toconstruction sites. It is vitally important to educate pupils about thedangers, especially with longer daylight hours and lighter eveningsapproaching.'
