Seven new neighbourhood nurseries are set to open in Gateshead this year through a 5m investment which will create nearly 500 new childcare places and enable more parents to take up work. The nurseries - some located in schools and others in stand-alone premises - will work closely with local out-of-school and breakfast clubs. The first nursery to open at Chopwell will provide 30 flexible full-time and part-time places. It will be followed by facilities at Bensham, Highfield, Blaydon, Felling, Deckham and Leam Lane. Margaret Hodge, minister for children, young people and families, said, 'By giving more of Gateshead's children access to high-quality care, early education and support, these seven neighbourhood nurseries are set to improve their life chances.'
